Craps – Will you be the one to crap out?

craps_game

Craps is a game where wits are tested and friendships can be broken beyond the ‘point of no return’ (queue Exposé lyrics in the background).
To play craps you will need:

  • Some dice (preferably two or more).
  • Some friends (artificial or otherwise).
  • Some cash.

Craps can be quite a confusing experience for a newbie (we have all been there don’t worry), so hopefully after reading (and subscribing) to this blog post can help you become and expert …or at least a moderately ok player.
Today we are going to talk about the simplest version of Craps, the Pass Line Bet version. This is where players bet in hopes that the “shooter” wins.

To decide who goes first players must take in turn rolling a pair of die. The player who gets the highest goes first and is named the “Shooter”.
The shooter then places a “Pass Line Bet” and each player places a bet on whether the shooter will win by matching the bet or exceeding it.
Once all bets are in the real fun begins.

The shooter’s first roll is called a “Come Out Roll”, during this roll there are a few rules to keep in mind.

  • If the shooter rolls a 7 or an 11, it is an automatic win. This is called a “Natural” roll.
    • If a natural roll occurs then you will win even money. This means you win back the amount you bet and the Casino/host matches that amount aswell.
Example: If you bet €5 and the shooter has a natural roll then you win €10. (€5 you originally bet + €5 matched by the Casino).
  • If the shooter rolls a 2, 3 or a 12, it is an automatic lose. This is called a “Crap out” roll.
  • If either of these conditions are met then the round is over and the game is started again.
  • If neither of these conditions are met then the number rolled becomes the “point”.

If the game continues on with a number rolled being the point, then we enter the “point phase” of the game.
Here the shooter must try and roll the point number again to win.

  • If they roll the point they win the Pass Line bets.
  • If they roll a 7 then they lose and the round is over.
  • If they roll any other number they must roll again.

This process continues until the shooter wins or loses.
If the shooter wins, you win back even money.

So that’s all there is to the simplest version of craps. There are more complicated betting standards that can be played but for now baby steps will do.
